Earth Day is a day to celebrate nature. It’s also a day to raise awareness and learn about environmental responsibility. With the increase of global climate change, Earth Day has become more significant than in the past. Using the following Earth Day Tips, you can make a difference:
Recycling Tips
• Besides plastic drink bottles, remember about other types of plastic bottles (shampoo, cleansers, etc.).
• Learn how to recycle milk and juice via the Carton Council.
• Clean out aluminum cans and food cans before recycling.
• Donate hangars to dry cleaners or Laundromats.
• Find out where to recycle almost anything at Earth911.
• Recycle cell phones for domestic violence victims. Verizon Hopeline is one such outreach program.
• Drop off shopping bags at most grocery stores.
• Buy items made of recycled materials.
Green Tips
• Upcycle – Create a new way to use items you no longer use or make them into something new. Find ideas by searching on Pinterest.
• Buy Energy Efficient appliances. The Federal Trade Commission explains how the EnergyGuide labels help you.
• Turn off electric items and running water when not in use. Every bit counts.
• Try carpooling, check your tire pressure often, and keep your car in good working condition to save gas.
• Compost your leftover food.
• Use paper or reusable bags for shopping.
• Stop getting junk mail and catalogs. Sign up at Catalog Choice.
• Donate unwanted items.
• No more bottled water. Use an reusable insulated bottle
Earth Day Events 2013
• Find a local event by using the location finder on the EPA website.
• Take part in a Twitter chat on April 22nd at 2 PM ET about climate change with the hashtag #AskEPA
• The Face of Climate Change encourages you to upload a photo of yourself and a sign.
• Join in on the NASA Earth’s science highlights including “New views of the Earth at night” and Hurricane Isaac.
