As a parent, I am concerned about smartphone safety. The HTC Windows 8X phone has the Kid’s Corner feature. I’m considering using it for my 14 year old daughter after finding some mature websites and games on her phone.
The Kid’s Corner is an individualized area that is reached without my Windows 8X password. I can add apps, games, videos and music. My daughter can customize it a bit by changing the wallpaper, theme color and changing the name on the lock screen.
There is no access to the internet, (one of my biggest concerns) the phone or texting. In fact, only items in the Kid’s Corner can be used. With some apps, the websites can be opened and may allow some charges for example, extra points. All in all, though this best smartphone safety for kids that I have seen.
My husband, my daughter and I recently signed a smartphone contract because of the issues we found on her phone. She admitted that the ability to access the internet is very tempting. Since she owns a Windows 7 phone, Kids Corner isn’t available, so we are considering purchasing a Windows 8X phone for her. This way as she gets older and can be trusted, she can move up to more access of the internet and apps.
We have always had a commitment to smartphone safety, but my daughter easily found a way around it. Being tech savvy sure has its downfalls. But, Kid’s Corner on the Windows 8X phone allows for more freedom and security.
Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Wireless Ambassador program and have been provided with a wireless device and three months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.
